![]() This immutable file size initially made it impossible to distribute music in anything other than a tangible format, but the scientific community understood the impact of reducing the file size. A 3-minute WAV of pure silence will be the same size as a 3-minute WAV of white noise. The WAV file is a lossless recreation of an acoustic recording. While recording in digital allowed for instantaneous punch-ins, virtually limitless takes, and edits that were staggeringly simple to execute, the WAV file became the gold standard for CD distribution and the MP3s spread in the subterranean and burgeoning world of the internet was the second wave of the tsunami. Digitization was like an earthquake to the prior stability of the music industry, both on the recording side and on the distribution side. To this day, however, few things have been quite as impactful as the digitization of music. The typical length of a single and an album were initially set by the limitations of vinyl, the frequency response is largely shaped by the recording medium, and our effects have slowly morphed through the acoustic, mechanical, electrical, and digital domains. The art is inherently limited by the technology used to create it, more so than in most art forms. I developed this concept on and off for a few years, and had bits of working hardware and software in various stages, but after a few years I grew to like the idea of reducing the project complexity (in size and moving parts). The audio world is a funny thing. "My original idea was to use RFID tags on random vinyl records to identify Spotify albums as they were placed on a record player. "Diskplayer is a project I created which combines the nostalgia of physical media with some of the practicalities of on-line streaming music," Fizzotti explains. They're certainly not something you'd think of if you wanted to store digital music, being able to hold at best a single song in a halfway-decent-bitrate MP3 file.įizzotti's approach, though, requires only a few bytes per album - by streaming the required music instead. ![]() Holding, in their most common incarnations, either 720kB (Double Sided Double Density) or 1.44MB (Double Sided High Density), floppy disks are an all-but extinct medium. Engineer Dino Fizzotti has come up with an interesting way to load his favorite albums and artists on streaming music service Spotify: 3.5" floppy disks. ![]()
