Since then, the township board has reduced the road district levy by 5%. Initiated by Hanover Township trustees, residents voted in 2017 to eliminate the township’s road district and highway commissioner, with the township assuming the duties and responsibilities. Not all township officials are flat-out opposed to consolidation. In 2021, a bill that would have taken this model of township abolishment statewide failed. In 2020, McHenry County voters overwhelmingly rejected abolishing two townships. A measure signed into law in 2019 allowed for a referendum on township abolishment in McHenry County. From 2015 to 2017, the board provided more than $250,000 to agencies in danger of closing as a result of the state’s budget crisis. The Hanover Township Mental Health Board disburses more than $1 million to agencies that address mental health needs including developmental disabilities, addiction and substance abuse. Some townships have the benefit of a Mental Health Board that provides funding to local agencies. The state cannot be trusted to consistently fund youth and other social services. These at-risk families and individuals would have few options if the pantry closed. The Township Food Pantry, open six days a week with evening hours, experienced 9,413 visits in our last fiscal year. Last year, Hanover Township provided more than 10,000 bus rides for seniors to attend doctor’s appointments, receive dialysis and shop for groceries.
